So Did Diddy Really Graduate By Not Finishing School?

Today, May 10, 2014, Howard University in Washington DC held their Spring 2014 commencement ceremony for their 2014 graduating class. Congratulations to all those lovely graduates who’ve conquered that major milestone. But what I really want to talk about is Howard University’s decision to choose Sean “P. Diddy” Combs as the honorary graduate for the ceremony.

20140511-095313.jpg

The debate that’s been circulating since Howard announce that their keynote speaker was Diddy revolved around the idea that he didn’t complete college. But yet, he’s being honored with a doctoral degree in humanities. HOW DID THAT HAPPEN? Diddy dropped out of school to pursue a career in the music industry. Obviously, he made history making such a big decision for himself.

But the real question is “Does this man deserve to be granted with such an acknowledgement or to even receive this honorary award at all?” People took to Twitter after hearing about the news expressing annoyance towards the school’s decision. One student wrote, “Can someone explain why Diddy, a person who never graduated from Howard, is speaking at graduation?” Another tweeted: “diddy is gonna make the commencement speech at Howard but what is he gonna say. ‘Well I dropped outta here & got rich but good luck (sic).” (Source

Is this the way to react after hearing who’s your graduation keynote speaker? Come on now, it’s Diddy! He’s millions of people’s inspiration because he’s so successful.

I can see the frustration that many people are having with this guy becoming the spokesperson at their graduation. But I believe he deserves this award just as much as any of those graduates sitting in the audience. He graduated from the school of life by experiencing first hand the ends and outs of a dream he took head on. For many, that’s tougher than taking a couple of college courses.

20140511-094851.jpg

In my post “What I Really Learned While In College,” I share my opinion about how I believe life experiences will teach you more than the classroom setting. It pushes you to learn for yourself and motivates you to do better when its something that you want to do. Sometimes, college is someone’s dream. But we really go to school to learn how to pursue a dream in a career we would enjoy doing maybe for the rest of our lives. So what really wrong with Diddy receiving a reward for achieving a goal he had while attending Howard University?

The real reason for why people are so bummed about this man getting this award is because he didn’t have to pay for all those years of schooling people would normally pay for a doctoral degree. But I say, mind your business because he paid it the right way. He paid by dedicating his time to what he believe is worth it. Anyone who’s going after what they want should be congratulated for perseverance. That’s not easy to do, especially when someones trying to work within a field like the music industry. If many people were granted with degrees for actually going after what they wanted and obtaining the level of success that deserves such recognition, don’t you think people will be more willing to learn more about whatever it takes to get to where they want to go? Knowledge should have never became something we must pay for, anyway.

Diddy made a way for himself to become successful without a structured system, like a university, telling him how to go about doing what he wants. What he did, by dropping out and going after his goals, is how I feel about getting a master’s degree. I believe I can be successful without it because I’m willing to do whatever it takes to get me where I want to be. If someone has the mental strength to achieve, they will.

So what I’m leaving you with is the thought: Is it really necessary to have degree if your field of work doesn’t require you to have one? Tell me in the comments below.

I Will Never Swim In Baltimore’s Inner Harbor…Eww

So the wheel that’s supposedly going to help clean Baltimore’s Inner Harbor for residents to fish and swim in was revealed to the public today. Here’s the picture that Baltimore’s Fox 45 News posted to their Facebook page.

Inner Harbor Water Wheel

Efforts to have the water swimmable and fishable are said to be complete by 2020. That’s SIX years away. The wheel will pick up litter floating down the Jones Falls River. The wheel is in part powered by sunlight and water. What do you think this new change will do for Baltimore?

I don’t know about anyone else, but I will never in my lifetime dip my caramel skin in that BLACK water. Water isn’t meant to be black. I hope the city will clean it as much as possible, but you will not find me swimming in that water. There’s a period during the year where I see nothing but dead fish surfacing that water. Boats that leak oil are stationed in that water. The harbor’s water alone sinks!

Growing up in Baltimore and seeing the water never look its original color may be tainting my ability to believe the chances of the harbor being clean is possible. If I see it’s coloration change during my lifetime, I will THINK about testing the waters though there’s no guarantee that’ll change my mind.

So what do you think? Will you take your chances with the Baltimore Inner Harbor in the year 2020? Leave your comments below. I’m betting I’m not the only one who’s hesitant.

Live Forever with Modelz of Distinction’s Immortal Fashion Show

I’m on the roll with these fashion gigs. I have another to share with the viewers of Doc’s Castle Media. Did you hear about Towson University’s sponsored model troupe Modelz of Distinction? Well, they’re currently on fire. This weekend, they’ll be hosting another fashion event titled Immortal.
20140507-131340.jpg

I’ve labeled this organization as “on fire” because word of mouth as reached me numerous of times regarding MOD. It’s about time that Doc’s Castle Media hop in on the excitement. I mean, just read the words from MOD’s very own secretary Kara Achilihu:

Our shows have grown with each year, reaching full capacity each time. Our shows not only include models ripping the runway, but feature an array of talent such as musicians, dance teams, poetry slams, raffles, prizes and more. MOD also participates in community outreach, performing community service and social events such as car washes, talent shows, cookouts, etc. We were most recently featured on WPB Radio twice, as well as a feature in The Towerlight, Towson University’s student newspaper.

They’ve been doing the damn thing. Lets give credit when it’s due.

Kara submitted a little snippet of last years show. I wish I attended. There’s so many beautiful people, both men and woman. Doesn’t it make you want to walk the stage, too?

So what are you doing this Saturday, May 10 at 7:15pm? If you’re doing the usual, stop right now and switch your plans. Indulge into something different by supporting this local event. Even if you’re going for the buffet, show your support by attending Modelz of Distintion’s Immortal fashion show. I bet you’ll feel fancy once it’s over.

Is It Really Chinese Food Or Nah?

Are we eating cat or are we eating dog? Someone has to let us know!

Well, I’m assuming the mystery for many shall be over sometime at this year’s 2014 Tribeca Film Festival. Wicked Delicate Films takes us on a journey to explain one of America’s famous delicacies, General Tso Chicken. Mmm!

I don’t know about you, but while I was growing up, I would hear a lot of rumors regarding chinese food. Can it be trusted? Is it really chicken? What part of the chicken looks like this? Nobody knew so ignorance took the lead, and people began to think we were eating cat. I don’t know why people would continue to eat cat if they believe that’s what the chicken was. But it must have been some delicious cat.

I always thought why would the health department allow stores to slaughter cats? I never stopped eating. It was chicken to me. For the people who didn’t think so, why the hell would you eat something you do not trust?

Anyway, I want to know all the crazy things people heard about their food while growing up. What’s the craziest assumption you heard about food? Let me know in the comments below.

Fun at Baltimore’s 1st Annual Fashion Truck Rally

I did something new last Saturday. If you live in Baltimore, sometimes you’d consider this city as a place where it’s pretty hard to find something new to do as recreation. I spend my summers looking for places to go. It’s really hard to find something fun to do without having to repeat the same activities over and over. But there’s warm weather on the rise so I should be able to do a lot more this season. This Saturday was officially the kick off to my season full of events, starting with the Boulevard of Chic Fashion Truck Rally.

2014-04-27 00.33.06

I had fun experiencing, for the first time, shopping from a fashion truck. It was indeed a moment of discovery. Imagine all the goodies a girl can buy from a truck that’s similar to your neighborhood’s infamous Ice Cream truck, except all your fashion treats can be found there. Yup, this is what I was apart of this weekend.

20140429-003605.jpg

Check me and Doc’s Castle Media’s featured blogger Brianna of Rebellious Rebel flicking it up for the camera.

I met the owners of some of Baltimore’s local small businesses, exchanged some business cards, took some photos and bought some jewelry. It was cool. I hope that there will be other fashion truck rallies in the future. If there should be, I’m in there like swimwear! Check out my video of all the nice things I saw this weekend.

You Can Catch Me On The Boulevard of Chic

I can be such girl at times…SIKE! I’m rarely that! For the people who truly know Doc, they are aware that I am far from being a girly girl. I prefer to be more laid back and let my beauty speak for itself. Ha-ha!

But with this invitation to attend the Boulevard of Chic on April 26th, I could become a girly girl in a matter of a few hours.

BOC

Boulevard of Chic (BOC) is a Baltimore’s first and only fashion truck rally. Meant to be a shopping opportunity for women of all ages, BOC will offer the best trendy apparel from local entrepreneurs through this fashionable celebration. BOC’s mission is to bring savvy entrepreneurs and artist together to promote the “Shop Local” trend. The experience alone should be the attention grabber for those who like to snag their goods from different places, and not shopping at the mall or shopping center. It’s such an awesome opportunity for those who are fashion scavengers.

I was invited to be a VIP blogger for this 1st annual event. I’m ready to see all the nice things I can buy while attending BOC. So if you have any time this weekend to come out and buy some new things for your closet, Boulevard of Chic is the place to be. You’ll definitely catch me shopping for something unique to add to my collection. I hope to see you there.

4/20 But Let’s Not Forget That It’s Easter Sunday

Four-twenty is an unforeseen holiday that I never pictured would have so much of an impact in the United States of America during my lifetime. Even while celebrating Easter Sunday, people will continue to take their puffs of smoke on the herbal drug as celebration for the cannabis culture. Too me, it has always been unpredictable to determine how fast this cannabis movement would develop. While growing up, I always assumed that marijuana would be illegal. As I’m seeing growth in the support to push this “drug” for legalization, I can now make assumptions for when I believe weed will be fully accepted into society. Times are truly changing when something that had such a bad connotation becomes praised in the mainstream media.

20140420-104821.jpg

I know most of you are probably “waking and baking” this morning as a celebration for 4/20, but who’s celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ, today? Every time a group of smokers mentions what day Easter falls on, they’re taking notice that it falls on an important day for them. It’s a smoker’s celebration on the Lord’s day?! “OMG! We’re going to be high at church!” Dang, soberness for the Lord was immediately thrown out of the window. Ha-ha! The hype for 4/20 is officially “off-the-chain” when people are looking to smell like the plant while praising Jesus Christ in church.

The holiday which should have rightful ownership is Easter. It’s the day we we’re all promises life after death. The celebration has been apart of people’s lives since the beginning of time. Why should it change now? Well that’s what I believe. I’m a christian. My day is starting with the Bible not a blunt because I respect my Lord first before some cigarillo full of weed. I glorify his blessing for dying for me before the blessing of the “natural” plant to my lungs, which over the years the plant has been manipulated by man to give an extra kick of THC for your body, so is it really all that natural? I will not forget about Jesus this day.

20140420-105154.jpg

I know many other people won’t forget about him this day. I just hope the respect for God isn’t lost in your festivities today. You may smoke all you want but remember which choice is a true priority in your life; which rules over you? At the end of the day, you should know what is the most important to you. So what will it be?

What are you doing today? Are you waking up to a blunt or a bible? Let me know in the comments below.

Black with 5.0 GPA! Why Are We So Many Surprise

Congratulations to Akintunde Ahmad for being accepted into multiple Ivy League colleges with a GPA of 5.0. He’s able to do anything he puts his mind to, and so can many others do the same. I’m proud but this shouldn’t be taken in such a surprising tone.

Akintunde is black, obviously. I believe that’s majority of the reason for how he made the news this month for being accepting in such prestigious schools. I’m upset that his skin color has to be the reason. Come on now, there are so many white children who achieve this goal yearly, but it’s when a black male reaches this level of success the world stops.

See what the media portrays us as? See what the world does to black people? They highlight our success like we’re incapable of achieving a goal as being accepted into these select few of colleges. There’s so much that should be said about how the media molds people’s perceptions of black people because not only is it making us proud to see something like this happening, it highlights that there are so very few black people doing it.

There has to be a way to keep black people motivated to showcase to society their possibilities. Times where there use to be civil freedoms that we once would fight for are often forgotten in my generation and it’s sad. What’s more sad is the fact that we know there’s a lack, and people continue to not make an effort to change society’s views. We glorify ratchet mess and seek only to get faded off substances while continually digging us a hole to indulge further into our poverty. Someone please elaborate on how this is a good thing to see everyday?

Blacks need more people like Akintunde in the media achieving positivity so that there will be others who will be inspired. I want to hear more positive success stories!

This is your time to shine. If you know of anyone who’s achieving something positive in their life, comment below with their experiences. Lets change the medias perceptions of us starting today!

Baltimore Hawks Attracts the Hungry and Humble for 1st ABA Tryouts

Saturday, March 29, 2014 marked the first American Basketball Association tryouts for Baltimore city’s new team, the Baltimore Hawks. The turnout of the tryout was bigger than expected. Over 30 prospects attended this Saturday to compete for a spot on the professional basketball team. Such event would have you proud to see a group of guys pursuing a career in what they dream.

20140402-014131.jpg

I had to the opportunity to chat with both owners of the Baltimore Hawks. As I spoke with the power duo for the team, Gregory Brown and Quentin Harper, they discussed with me their expectations for the players.

20140402-013908.jpg

Even as a spectator, it was easy to find those who were hungry for their opportunity to shine. Strong-willed players put in work to be noticed for a shot that could change their future, for they knew the decision was in the team officials’ hands. As I watch these men condition, I spotted a few individuals with heaps of determination. For readers to get an understanding of the possible talent, I interviewed Dominic Thompson, Jason Sharp, Dashawn Bradshaw, and Lamar Bentley. Listen to the audio below.

One quality the Baltimore Hawks expects their team members to have as perseverance for excelling in this sport is a strong mental. Players need to be able stand out in times of adversity. Many of the prospects were able to do this while also showing great collaboration in teamwork. While players seemed to struggle with a task, others were generous in showing respect through applauding to support one another. It was extremely encouraging for others to learn to not quit and to do their best, though this may be a competition for a position on a team. By simply watching these guys, I was encouraged do my best. I had to “Turn Up” for my interviews. Ha-Ha! They were so hungry for the opportunity. Who could help but be inspired by the positivity.

There definitely is potential in this city. Baltimore will have a great future with players that keep the drive and determination to reach success. The Baltimore Hawks will make sure of it.

There’s another chance for players who didn’t come out to the first team tryouts. Come out to St. Francis Academy on Sunday, April 27, 2014 to get your spot on the Baltimore Hawks roster. More details at www.baltimorehawks.com.
